Wrapsody
in Blue
1986
Award
winning site sculpture commissioned by Pro Arts and the Oakland
Art Commission.
Hidden
inside a large grove of Italian Stone Pines overlooking Lake Merritt
in Oakland, California, we discovered a cathedral-like space where
tree limbs arch to form a high, protective canopy. To emphasize
the dramatic forms, we wrapped selected branches with fabric of
an intense blue color that echoed the blue of the nearby boathouse
and sailboat covers and reflected patches of sky visible through
the pine needles. These wrapped branches outlined the powerful
structure of the canopy overhead, transformed the branches into
sinuous lines, and enticed viewers into the grove to experience
the magical qualities of the space.
